Why is an adventuring party name important?
Embarking on expeditions to explore monster-infested dungeons, defend towns from attacking hordes, or save the oppressed from fiends and brutes can be incredibly dangerous alone. At some point, most adventures will seek out others with unique skills who can aid them in their grand pursuits.
While some may seek the security and variety of members in a larger adventuring guild, many often choose a group of close, reliable friends. Each party member may have their individualized talents, but others will often share their triumphs as those of a group. Whether woven into song by a bard or introduced to the realm's monarchs, an adventuring party will almost certainly need a good name that represents the entire group.
What makes a party?
While Fifth Edition allows for more flexibility and forgiveness in party construction than older editions of Dungeons & Dragons, certain roles persist. Though not an exact science, most adventuring parties include some combination of Tank, Support, Magician, Striker, and Face. These are not required roles, nor are they intended to pigeonhole players. Characters can inhabit multiple functions depending on the skills they develop and may transition between positions as they gain new levels and powers.

Tanks are individuals meant to dive headlong into battle, allowing their allies to keep their distance while raining down punishment from relative safety. As mountains of hit points and armor, these warriors do their best to press the enemy and keep the attention away from their friends. Though some may see tanks as mindless aggressors, their main objective is to protect their team members through their strength and resolve.
The Support position has evolved from the earlier days when most players in this role became relegated as the party “healer.” Though healing magics still have an important place in the adventuring world, support players have expanded their skills to include deception, protection, and control. Their racial traits, talents, and arcane abilities go beyond hit point dispensing to provide their allies with opportunities to do what they do best.
Though they often have the most impressive magical abilities, Magicians or arcane users tend to sacrifice their fortitude for power. The ability to destroy large numbers of enemies and reshape battlefields often offsets their considerable lack of constitution. As a result, they typically rely on the assistance of others to protect them from the potential onslaught of their foes.
Strikers are incredibly skilled warriors who often focus extremely damaging blows on a singular victim. These party members are living weapons whose mission is to disable the enemy's leader, healer, or other more critical individuals. Strikers usually develop skills that give them excellent mobility and the capability to attack from any range. They focus on clever positioning that allows them to take full advantage of their prey and deal the most lethal damage possible.
The Face is often the most charismatic member of the group and acts as the frontperson when conversing with outsiders. A face can be critical in an adventure that heavily features conversation and intrigue over armed confrontations. However, they can still find purpose within a combat-heavy campaign. Distraction, deception, and performance are among the arsenal of those with high charisma, and many may even take the role of leadership when other allies hesitate. Still, this doesn't mean that the Face is required or needs to be the only party member that speaks. After all, the loudest voice in the room is seldom the wisest.
